How to Pray When You Feel Like God Is Asking Too Much

7 min read

You know what God is asking. You have heard it in prayer, felt it in your spirit, read it in His Word. And your honest response is: That is too much. Forgive the person who destroyed you? Stay in the city you want to leave? Give up the relationship that makes you happy? Trust Him with the outcome you cannot control? The ask feels unreasonable, and you are not sure you can do it.

You are in good company. Almost every significant figure in Scripture had a moment where God's request felt impossible. And almost every one of them said yes — not because they were strong, but because God gave them the strength they did not have.

God's Biggest Asks Come with Biggest Grace

Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son. Moses was asked to confront the most powerful ruler on earth. Mary was asked to carry a pregnancy that would ruin her reputation. Jesus was asked to carry the sin of the world to a cross. Every impossible ask from God came with impossible grace to match. He never sends you into something He has not already resourced you for.

And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.

2 Corinthians 9:8 (NIV)

How to Pray When God's Ask Feels Too Big

  1. Be honest about the resistance — Tell God it feels like too much. He is not surprised by your hesitation, and honesty is better than forced compliance.
  2. Ask for willingness — You may not be able to muster obedience, but you can ask God to make you willing. 'I cannot do this, but make me someone who can.'
  3. Separate feelings from faithfulness — Obedience does not require enthusiasm. You can say yes to God while crying, angry, or terrified. The yes is what matters.
  4. Take the first step only — You do not have to see the whole path. Just take the next step God is showing you. He will reveal the rest as you go.
  5. Remember what is on the other side — Every costly act of obedience in Scripture led to blessing — not always the kind expected, but always the kind that mattered.

Gethsemane Was an Honest Prayer

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed, 'Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not my will, but Yours be done.' Even Jesus wrestled with what God was asking. He sweated blood over it. But He did not skip the prayer — He prayed through the resistance until He found the strength to say yes. If Jesus needed to pray through His resistance, so do you. And that prayer is not weakness. It is worship.

Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.

Luke 22:42 (NIV)

How to Pray When You Struggle with Obedience

When following God feels harder than it should.

Reflection: Every impossible yes to God has led to something only He could do. What might be waiting on the other side of your obedience?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it is really God asking or just my own guilt?
God's voice aligns with Scripture, brings peace even in difficulty, and is confirmed through prayer and wise counsel. Guilt-driven obligations often feel frantic, shame-based, and disconnected from God's character. If the ask reflects God's nature — love, justice, mercy, faithfulness — it is likely from Him.
What if I say no to God?
God will not stop loving you. But saying no to God often means saying no to the best path forward — even when that path is hard. Jonah said no and ended up in a storm and a whale. He still got to Nineveh eventually. God is persistent with the people He calls.
Does God ever change His mind about what He is asking?
Sometimes God's ask is about timing rather than permanent direction. Stay in prayer and remain open. But be careful not to interpret your resistance as God changing His mind. Often what feels like a revised plan is simply your own reluctance looking for an exit.
